Custom niches

The New York Times recently ran an article about the benefits of adding a niche to your home. They didn’t reach out to me for my opinion, (hmm) so I thought this is my opportunity to share several niches (and window seats)  that we’ve designed over the years.

This niche is Winston’s favorite spot in my own home. It offers a view of nature and squirrels.

I’m a big fan of adding a niche to any room as it creates an intimate area that promotes feelings of safety and comfort. Niches help to reduce stress and anxiety by offering a space for relaxation and, depending on the location, a personal retreat.

This Saddle River niche was upgraded with a new bench cushion, window treatments and coordinating pillows.

We recently added a warm and inviting, yet functional, niche to our North Caldwell, NJ  client’s office.  We had their white bookshelves sprayed a warm brown paint color and added filing cabinets, where there was once a freestanding armoire, between the built-ins. Floral sconces, a nature themed grasscloth wallpaper, a custom bench cushion and pillows complete the unit.

“Before”

Have you ever wondered how to address a second floor landing? Adding built-in seating is a creative use of this space that you will pass by several times a day. It becomes an even more intimate space by stacking the shelving with books, photos and personal items.

I’m certain that Winston would concur that by adding a view of nature we have a recipe for what has been proven to help lower cortisol levels and promote mental clarity.

And what’s better than that?
